🎥 Topanga Canyon 1960s Home Movies (1963–69)

This is the kind of footage you can’t fake. Laurie Lanaro Slavin put together a sweet, totally real compilation of home movies from growing up in Topanga in the 1960s, filmed mostly by her dad, Einar Lanaro. You’ll spot Topanga Elementary (including a sixth-grade lunch scene from ’68/’69), old canyon views, Webb Trail, and even the bridge that used to connect the bottom of Bowers Drive over to Cave Way. It’s full of small moments, friends, family, and that unmistakable “everyone knew everyone” Topanga feeling. If you’ve lived here a long time, you’ll probably recognize something. If you’re newer, this is a perfect little time capsule of the canyon.

🏡 May 2026 Topanga Market Snapshot

Where the Market Is

There are 62 active listings in Topanga right now, which means buyers have more to choose from than they did when inventory was tighter. What’s standing out is how clearly the market is rewarding realistic pricing. A handful of the longer-running listings have made meaningful adjustments, while some of the newer ones are still holding at their original number to see how buyers respond.

There’s also a listing coming soon at 21302 Entrada Rd, expected to hit the market on 05/24/26.

Some of the more noticeable reductions include:

  • 701 Greenleaf Canyon Rd: $3,495,000 down to $3,195,000

  • 1527 Bainum Dr: $1,649,000 down to $1,350,000

  • 19643 Valley View Dr: $2,250,000 down to $1,995,000

  • 3439 Dorothy Rd: $2,695,000 down to $2,495,000

  • 21045 Mendenhall Ct: $2,500,000 down to $2,395,000

  • 21171 Colina Dr: $1,599,000 down to $1,399,000

  • 19901 Grand View Dr: $1,685,000 down to $1,595,000

  • 330 S Topanga Canyon Blvd: $1,349,000 down to $1,299,000

At the same time, newer listings like 229 Muerdago Rd at $1,600,000 and 19783 Valley View Dr at $1,399,000 are still at their original ask, which suggests those sellers are testing the market before making any moves.

The price range is still wide. There are some more approachable options, but most of the inventory sits well above $1 million, and buyers are responding by comparing homes carefully and negotiating when something feels overpriced.

For Buyers

This is a better market for buyers than it was when inventory was tight. With more to choose from, you can take your time, compare locations and conditions, and stay selective about what truly feels right.

It’s also a market where price and presentation matter. If a home has been sitting for a while, there’s often room for a better deal or at least a more realistic conversation.

For Sellers

A well-prepared home can absolutely still get strong attention, but buyers have more choices and they’re using them. Homes that show well and are priced in line with the market have a much better shot at getting traction early.

If a home comes out too high, it’s more likely to sit, and once that happens, price reductions tend to follow. The cleanest path is still the same one: a strong first impression, smart pricing, and a clear plan.

Looking Ahead

Late spring usually brings more serious buyers into Topanga, and that should hold true again this year. The difference now is that buyers don’t have to rush. They can watch, wait, and move quickly only when the right home comes along.

If you’re thinking about buying or selling this year, I’d love to walk through what’s realistic for your specific situation and what the market is actually responding to right now.

❓ In what year was the first Topanga Days held?

Hint: It began in the early 1970s, founded by actors, writers, artists, musicians, and nature lovers who called Topanga home.

Last month’s question: What was Topanga Canyon Boulevard originally called when it officially opened from the ocean to Ventura Boulevard in 1915?

Answer: It was originally called Topanga Highway when it opened on July 4, 1915. In 1933, it became part of the state highway system and was renamed Topanga Canyon Boulevard, with State Route 27 signage added in 1934.

🌮 Eat With the Season:

Crispy Smashed Taco Loaded Potatoes

Ingredients:

• 5 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, divided
• 4 small russet potatoes, scrubbed clean
• 1/3 cup plus 3 tbsp water, divided
• 1/2 tsp kosher salt
• 8 oz 90% lean ground beef
• 1 1/2 tbsp taco seasoning, homemade or store-bought
• 4 oz Mexican blend shredded cheese, divided

For Serving:

• Chopped tomatoes
• Chopped white onion
• Cilantro
• Pickled jalapeños
• Sour cream

Instructions:

  1. Heat oven to 450°F. Set racks to upper-middle and lower-middle. Coat a large rimmed baking sheet with 2 tbsp olive oil.

  2. Add potatoes and 3 tbsp water to a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover with a small vent. Microwave on high, flipping halfway through, until a fork slides in with little resistance, about 12 minutes.

  3. Transfer potatoes to the greased baking sheet, spaced apart. Smash each potato to about 1/2-inch thick using a second baking sheet or the bottom of a mixing bowl. Drizzle with 2 tbsp olive oil and rub it all over. Sprinkle with salt.

  4. Bake on the lower-middle rack, then rotate to the upper-middle rack halfway through, until deeply browned and crispy, 20 to 30 minutes.

  5. While potatoes roast, heat remaining 1 tbsp olive oil in a skillet over medium-high. Add taco seasoning and stir until fragrant, about 45 seconds. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Drain excess fat if needed. Stir in remaining 1/3 cup water. Lower heat and simmer until thickened, about 3 minutes. Cover to keep warm.

  6. To assemble, top each potato with 2 tbsp cheese, about 1/3 cup taco beef, then the remaining cheese. Bake on the upper-middle rack until cheese melts and the edges look lacy, 2 to 3 minutes. Serve with your favorite toppings.

Serving Suggestions:

🍅 Tomatoes and onion for freshness and crunch
🌿 Cilantro on top
🌶️ Pickled jalapeños for tang and heat
🥄 Sour cream to cool it down
🧀 Add extra cheese if you want it extra melty

Tip: Smash them hard enough to create lots of craggy edges. That’s what gets extra crispy in the oven. Leftovers keep in the fridge up to 3 days, but these are best right away while the edges are still crunchy.
